This new release is torn between metaphor and everyday life and it is an ironic and tempting response to the reality of a world filled with shallowness, competitive spirits and hostility. The song can also be considered a cry for help against the abuse of power and bullying. The lyrics are consequently sharp and straightforward, sending a clear message. And Poochyeeh’s voice and interpretation flow superbly with the precise tones.
Musically “El Atraco” is a combination of several styles perfectly put together and their contrast is what makes this single special. It is woven from elements of the legendary New York salsa scene from the 70s and also from popular Spanish music as produced by the renowned Spanish producer and two-time Latin-Grammy winner Campi Campón, only here his production is closer to a futuristic Catalan rumba. This shows the increasing interest of the duo to represent, play and mix their individual perspective and the music they grew up with, but also to give it a new contemporary turn. And they seem to be doing it pretty well, since their exuberant grooves and striking sounds have got a warm welcome everywhere they have played. It is truly an experience.
Both their album Cinema Usera (2018) and their new single El Atraco (2020) have been released by GMO – The Label’s Spanish partner label Infarto Producciones. After over ten years together, Sweet Barrio have undertaken different projects as a group, such as an original track for the Spanish film Nuestros amantes (2016, deutscher Titel: “Verlieb dich nicht in mich”). They have also received the Spanish Award Premio Pop-Eye in 2019 in the category Emerging Talent. Despite the current situation, they have been touring throughout Spain and taking their vibrant music to every venue.
